Natural Fibre Hub
Coega IDZ
In 2021, Calek was awarded the tender for the relocation of the CSIR nonwoven pilot plant from Summerstrand to Coega IDZ. This plant consists of two lines. The first line is the Temafa fibre opening and cottonising plant. The second line is a nonwoven line, including a carding and cross lapper, a needle punching machine and hydro entanglement line.
After some time, it was discovered that the facilities control system required a major upgrade. We were again provided with the opportunity to quote and won. Calek was able to accomplish the upgrade using state-of-the-art control systems using LS Electric equipment (who we are the agents for in the Eastern Cape)
The commissioning of the plant happened in February and is at present busy with trials processing fibres such as hemp, kenaf, flax, cotton, pineapple leaf, agave and basalt. The finished products are then used throughout various industries, such as automotive, medical textiles, filtrations and much more.
Calek is excited to be part of this groundbreaking industrialization of natural fibre.
